PERSONALITY:
HISTORY: Oliver's parents were not Pokémon trainers at some point during their lifetime unlike everyone else. They were actually both part of a travelling circus with their family until their late twenties. Sure the circus had Pokémon in it but it wasn't anything to do with them. Other circus members looked after and dealt with them. Neither Emily nor Hans cared about Pokémon much.
Despite still being flexible and talented acrobats, by the time it came to their late twenties the circus wanted to replace them with younger acrobats and get them administrating jobs in the circus like their parents had. Emily and Hans, who were by now a couple, did not like this idea at all and ran away from the circus together and bought a campervan to tour the world in, putting on little shows of their own.
They were passing through Viridian City one day when a news story on a TV in a shop window caught their eye. An infamous thief had stolen expensive and rare Pokémon right from under their guardians' noses. This got the couple's brains working and so they decided to embark on a career of thieving since their acrobatic career wasn't really going anywhere. They roamed the world in their campervan, stealing Pokémon and selling them on to rich morally grey buyers.
They never planned to have children but one day Emily discovered she was pregnant. After discussing it with Hans, she decided not to abort it but to keep it and raise it into the new family business - thievery. Oliver was brough up to be sly and nimble fingered. Since they were always travelling he had to be home-schooled but he managed quite well. Despite their teachings, Oliver was a goodhearted boy and was always uneasy about stealng. He only ever stole Pokémon items and not ever Pokémon themselves since he felt it was wrong.
Seeing their first son not being as like them as they wanted, the now married couple had another son and began raising him to be like them, dismissing Oliver as a failure. This son, Konrad, loved the thieving lifestyle much more and became an accomplished thief. He had no qualms about stealing Pokémon and he easily became Hans' and Emily's favourite child.
Aged ten, Oliver ran away from the campervan and began a Pokémon adventure, becoming estranged from his parents since they wanted nothing to do with him. He'd stop with new friends every so often and he'd work on learning things he needed to look after himself and filling in the gaps of his shabby home-schooled education (his parents weren't the best teachers since they'd failed school). In his early teens when he was staying in Saffron City (which he now considers home) with a friend and his parents he even took exams and passed them in order to have something his parent's hadn't.
He didn't work his way around the region of Kanto as fast as a normal trainer since he was working on his education and getting jobs to earn money too. He was 24 when he finally challenged the league. He'd been good enough to get the eight badges but he was knocked out by the first of the elite four after a tough battle. Passing through Kanto again, his parents and brother saw him on TV and decided to meet him again.
Things didn't go so well. It was rather awkward anyway and then Konrad went and got himself accidentally killed when he was winding up a large wild Pokémon for fun to prove how awesome he was now to his older brother. His arrogance only got him falling off the edge of a drop onto sharp rocks after being chased by the irate creature. Oliver stayed for the funeral but afterwards his parents started yelling at him and accusing him of preferring Pokémon to his flesh and blood since he took the view that if Konrad hadn't have been winding the Pokémon up, he wouldn't have been chased off the drop. Distraught that their favourite son was dead, his parents cut him off again for good.
The next few years Oliver travelled the other known regions, not training Pokémon anymore (he'd given his Pokémon away to trusted friends he'd met while challenging the league) and only working like most other adults. Hearing of Lerruen, his interest in Pokémon burst into life again and he set off to Lerruen and start training again.
