HISTORY: Jeffery was born to Lilian Mariee Smith of Johto after a one night stand nine months previously. It was an unplanned pregnancy and she was unable to contact the father. Due to her current circumstances, she gave her child away to be adopted.
He wasn't left in the Cherrygrove orphanage long. Babies and young children are always preferred over older children and so he was snapped up straight away by a young but infertile married couple by the name of Lewis who desperately wanted their own baby boy. They named the baby after his adoptive father, Jeffery.
At first the Lewis family stayed in Cherrygrove and brought Jeffery up there until he was about five years old. Little did he know that his birth mother was living in the same town and was barely a mile away. Little did he know she'd just given birth to his younger half brother. His parents knew as they were receiving letters from his birth mother for him to receive when the time was right.
That summer, his adoptive parents decided to move to Sinnoh to work at a Daycare there since they'd just been made redundant here from their boring white collar jobs. They'd always wanted to be breeders and now was their chance. Plus, after hearing that Lilian was in a stable relationship and had had another child in her letters which they'd been reading, they were worried she might try to get Jeffery back. Over their dead bodies.
And so, Liza, Jeffery and Jeffery Jr moved away from Cherrygrove in Johto to Solaceon Town in Sinnoh. It was a long way to move but it was worth it. After learning the ropes, they helped the Daycare business flourish and bloom. It seemed less like a job and more like a calling every day. As little Jeffery grew up, he felt the same. Of course he never was allowed to see the reproduction side of it. They only let him help look after eggs and young Pokémon.
As he got closer to ten years old, the Liza and Jeffery Sr began worrying if he'd leave them for an adventure. They began stressing the importance of a good education to him to make him stick around to at least finish his education off first. He did stay and get a few basic qualifications but wasn't really too interested. Luckily for his parents, he was interested in their career, not leaving. They began to teach him more of the business and he began working at the Daycare centre with them.
After his fourteenth birthday, he discovered a stash of letters whilst cleaning the house. Curious, he read them and discovered to his shock that he was adopted and he had a half brother too. Angrily, he confronted his adoptive parents with the letters and they burst into tears. They told him they'd hid them from him because they hadn't wanted him to leave them. Understandably their was a tension between Jeffery and his parents for the next week or so.
By the end of the week, Jeffery had decided to leave. His parents begged him not to but he told them he truly still loved them. It was just something he had to do. He had to go see his birth mother and his half brother. He kept in touch with them on the journey to Sinnoh and back. When he was back in Cherrygrove again, he tracked down his mother's house but didn't go in. He saw her through the window doing housework and he saw Max's father there too but not Max.
He was satisfied enough for now by seeing his birth mother but he wanted to see his little brother too. He'd always wanted a brother. He knocked on the door and asked Lilian as casually as he could if a Maxwell Smith lived there. He was told that he'd left for the Lerruen region recently and she asked why he wanted to know. Unable to think of anything to say, Jeffery ran off.
Once back in Sinnoh again, he told his parents he'd seen him mother but he was going to the Lerruen region to find his brother. They were sad he was leaving again but weren't as distraught as before due to him keeping in contact with them on his previous journey. He promised to do the same while he was on a journey in Lerruen which he made them understand could be some considerable time, maybe years. It took a while to convince them to let him go for this long but they appreciated that he hadn't just run off and never contacted them again so they agreed.
